Finasteride is an oral medication and is available by prescription for males. It inhibits the action of an enzyme in the body that converts testosterone in DHT (di-Hydrotestosterone). DHT miniaturises hair/hair follicles in genetically susceptible people. Studies have demonstrated that Finasteride can decrease DHT production by 60-65%.

Clinical studies have demonstrated that in around 86% of people using it there is nil or significantly diminished hair loss. Additionally, in around 46-50% there is an improvement in density in the mid scalp and crown regions (though typically not in the front region).

Side effects may occur with this medication; and in 1-2% of males the libido (sexual drive) may be reduced. Side effects resolve upon ceasing medical treatment.
