Dutasteride

Dutasteride is an oral medication available by prescription only. It is more effective in treating hair loss than Finasteride.  It works by a similar mechanism to Finasteride, but acts on two enzymes that convert testosterone to DHT. This results in a reduction of DHT production by 90-95%.

The side effects of Dutasteride are similar to Finasteride, but are more likely to occur (statistically).  Dutasteride has not been used for as long as Finasteride so its long-term effects are unknown.

At the Newin Institute we would only consider recommending Dutasteride if a patient has not responded to Minoxidil or Finasteride.

It is not approved by the TGA for use in Hair Loss.
